Light Texture Tutorials

Ever wonder howicon makers make 100x100 light textures? While some edit and crop stock images to make them, others do make their own from scratch. Want to knowhow? Well then you've come to the right place! On this page I'm gonna teach you just how to do it! And hey, if you create something neato, why not Submit them as well? :)

This tutorial could also work for wallpaper backgrounds and large scale textures.

The tutorial

1. Step one. You'll want to open up a new document in photoshop. It can beany size, but I recommend at least 1024x768 to give you a wider area to crop textures from.

2. For this step you'll want to fill your entire canvas with black, color #000000.

3. Now we will begin the good stuff! For this step go to filter > render > lens flare. You can pickwhatever lensflare you like the best. Place it somewhere on your canvas, wherever you please.

4. Repeat this several times until you have many lens flares all over your black canvas just like the example below. Do note you may want to edit the brightness when placing these.

Step 4 Example

5. Go to filter > distort > polar cordinates. Tick the Polar to rectangle option. Repeat this step several times until you have something like below.

Step 5 Example

6. Duplicate the layer. Now on the top layer go to filter > Distort > shear. Mess with the options how you please. I got this below.

Step 6 Example

7. Set the top layer's blending mode to "overlay"or "soft light" whichever you prefer. Duplicate the layer and use the shear filter once again. Keep it in the soft light or overlay mode.

Step 7 Example

8. Now. You should flaten your layers. Layer > flaten image.

9. From here you have three options. You can either begin cropping it into 100x100 icons, color it and begin cropping, or you can continue using the distort filters andoverlay options to try to get something more appealing. For this tutorial, however, I'm going to continue on and just make 100x100 textures since I'm just showing you the basic method to make them.

10. With the rectangular marquee tool, you'll want to select an area in your large light texture to use as 100x100 textures. Just select an area of your liking with the marquee tool, copy it, and paste it into a new document. Afterwards, resize it to 100x100 and, tada! You can now save your first light texture

This was a very simple tutorial! With some tweaking you could get some really awesome things using this. With more distort filters, coloring, and whatever your imagination can come up with, you'll be able to create something truly unique.

Below aresome examples of textures I cropped from the larger image in step 7. :)
